BHEL to export Solar Photovoltaic Cells to Italy

New Delhi, July 12, 2004

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has achieved a major milestone in the export of Solar Photovoltaic (SPV) Cells by bagging a large contract for the supply of monocrystalline solar cells from Italy.

Valued at nearly Rs.6 Crore, the contract has been placed on BHEL by S.E. Projects, Italy. To be used by the customer to manufacture PV modules for installation in Italy and Germany, these cells will be manufactured at the ultra-modern facility set up by BHEL at its Electronics Division in Bangalore.

PV Modules are used in homes for rooftop systems, to provide green power directly from sunlight. The use of this clean source of energy is becoming increasingly popular in countries like Germany with legislation being enacted to encourage the use of Solar and Wind Power. These PV modules generate power which is converted to grid quality power by suitable power conditioning units and then fed directly to the grid or used to power the loads.

This is the second contract of its kind for Solar Cells from Italy and reflects the customer’s confidence in BHEL’s capability. The performance of the Solar Cells, supplied earlier by BHEL to S.E.Projects, Italy, has been lauded by the customer. Besides these cells, PV Modules have also been exported to Australia and Germany by the company.

BHEL’s success in the export market is backed by international certification for Solar Modules, received after successful testing at the European Solar Test Installation, Joint Research Centre, ISPRA, Italy – a benchmark of international acceptance.
