Canadian Health Minister calls on Dr. Ramadoss
New Delhi, 19 January 2005.
The Canadian Health Minister, Mr. Ujjal Dosanjh who is on a visit to India as part of the Canadian Prime Minister’s delegation today called on the Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dr. Anbumani
Ramadoss. The Canadian Minister complimented India on the effective management of rescue and relief operations in the wake of Tsunami.
The Health Minister gave a brief overview of the priorities of the UPA Government in the Health sector including raising health expenditure from two to three per cent of GDP in the next five years. Mr. Dosanjh explained to his Indian counterpart that Canada had acquired extensive experience in managing public health issues and said he would be happy to extend any assistance which India requires in this area. Dr. Ramadoss referred to the need to prevent diseases through awareness creation and said he was planning to set up two public health institutes in Delhi and
Chennai. The Minister sought sharing of experience on the Government Health Insurance Scheme which has been implemented in Canada.
