He was among a few leaders of the pre-independence era who
after having plunged themselves into the political struggle
continued to take active interest in social, cultural and
educational work.
Recognizing Lalaji’s social service on various occasions,
Garg said that in 1888, Lalaji joined the Indian National
Congress and associated himself with the “Swadeshi” movement.
It was during this time that he contacted select persons,
mooted the idea of an Indian Bank, to be started with Indian
capital and to serve the interests of Indian population.
Thus PNB as we know of today, was born on 12th April, 1895.
Bank opened for business with an authorized capital of Rs.2
lac. Today, after 112 years, PNB is serving 3.6 crore
customers, through more than 4500 offices including Extension
Counters. Bank has largest network of 3153 CBS Service outlets
at 1217 centres covering 88% of total business. Bank has
installed 1293 ATMs and customers of Punjab National Bank have
an access to 25600 ATMs through other arrangements. Bank has a
total business of over 2,54,000 crores. Prudent banking and
integrity, which were the guiding principles of PNB's
founders, have stood the bank in good stead.
Garg further added that we visualize financial inclusion as
a distinct opportunity and business proposition for future
growth. A significant part of our society, both in rural and
urban areas still do not have even a simple bank account. For
including them in PNB family, we need to bring banking to the
door step of customers. We have already launched three pilot
projects which are technology enabled and bank is likely to
launch seven more pilots to promote financial inclusion in
Indo-Gangetic plain where bank has dominating presence. Under
financial inclusion, bank plans to cover 30,000 villages and
75 million people in 5 years.
