India & Singapore to Sign MoU soon in Culture Sector
New Delhi, January 19, 2008
India and Singapore to sign Memorandum of Understanding in
culture sector soon to increase bilateral cultural
cooperation.The Minister for Community Development, Youth &
Sports and Arts of Singapore Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan today
called on Tourism and Culture Minister Smt. Ambika Soni.
During their half an hour meeting here both the leaders
discussed ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in tourism
and culture sectors. Smt. Ambika Soni welcoming the visiting
leader said India is currently witnessing boom in tourism
sector and 5 million tourists arrived in the country in 2007.
She said there are some challenges such as room shortage and
better connectivity and infrastructure in India and the
Government is working to create more infrastructure facilities
to sustain the boom. Soni said Singapore airlines has one
of the largest network and this can be utilized to promote
tourist circuits in India. She informed the visiting dignitary
that she is going to participate in the ASEAN tourism
minister’s conference which is scheduled to take place in
Bangkok from 21st January, 2008.
Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan suggested a joint marketing
strategy to promote tourism with India and Australia on
trilateral basis. He showed keen interest in the steps taken
by the Indian Government to sustain the tourism growth and
related issues.
He thanked Ambika Soni to allow
exhibition of Lord Buddha Relics in Singapore and said this is
a special gesture by the Government of India.
