New Delhi, January 19, 2008

India and Congo have agreed to explore the possibility of cooperating in industrial diamonds in view of abundance of availability of these in Congo and Indian expertise in cutting and polishing of diamonds. Congo is world’s second largest producer of diamonds and Indian companies like MMTC etc. are in a position to join hands for exploitation of rich potential which exists in this sector. Kamal Nath, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, during his bilateral meeting with Endra-Philippe Futa, Minister of National Economy and Commerce of Democratic Republic of Congo, also stated that India could cooperate with DR Congo in a meaningful exploitation of minerals like copper – and cobalt which exist in huge quantity in Congo.

The Indian Commerce Minster also mentioned about the abundant hydro-electric power resources in DR Congo and stated that NHPC or other Indian companies in this field could provide technical expertise in exploitation of this energy resource in cooperation with Societe Nationale D’electricite (SNEL) of DR Congo. Kamal Nath also reiterated the willingness of the Indian government to offer technical expertise to Congo in modernising and managing small and medium enterprises through National Small Industries Corporation.

Recalling the visit of Simon Mboso Kianputu, DR Congo Minister for Industries to India in September 2007 during which many areas of cooperation were identified particularly between the SMEs of the two countries, Kamal Nath observed that import from DR Congo are increasing while exports from India have come down since 2003-04. He expressed the need for increasing trade with DR Congo in view of stabilisation of economic activity in DR Congo. He also offered Indian assistance in modernising of mining sector in Congo.
