India, Myanmar to discuss enhancing of bilateral ties

New Delhi, January 02, 2008

India and Myanmar will discuss ways to enhance their bilateral ties, particularly in trade and energy fields when the Foreign Ministers of both nations meet in New Delhi.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee will hold wide ranging talks with his visiting Myanmarese counterpart U Nyan Win.

India is looking to enhance its ties in energy sector with Myanmar, considering the rich gas resources in that country.

India has been interested in some off-shore gas blocks in Myanmar but the bids have not been successful so far.
A multi-modal transport project is also expected to be finalised at Wednesday's meeting.

During the talks, India is also expected to seek continued cooperation of Myanmar in curbing the activities of North-east insurgents.

The issue of defence cooperation is also expected to figure in the discussions amid indications that New Delhi has halted military supplies in view of international outcry over Myanmar's dealing with the aspect of human rights.

The Indian side is expected to press for early restoration of democracy during the talks.

India has been resisting international pressure over its dealing with Myanmar, arguing that it has to take care of its own multi-sectoral interests with regard to the eastern neighbour.
