BHEL wins Rs.650 Crore EPC contract in Libya
New Delhi, February 19, 2008
Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has achieved another
breakthrough in Libya with a prestigious export contract for
setting up a 300 MW Gas Turbine-based power plant on
Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) basis.
Valued at Rs.650 Crore, the order envisages setting up the 300
MW Western Mountain Power Project Extension in Libya for
General Electricity Company of Libya ( GECOL ).
Significantly, the order comes close on the heels of the
successful turnkey execution of a Rs.1,400 Crore contract for
the 600 MW (4x150 MW) Western Mountain Gas Turbine-based Power
Project, which is also the largest Gas Turbine based power
plant installed by BHEL so far. The excellent performance of
the plant paved the way for the customer reaffirming its
confidence in the company's capabilities.
The present contract envisages two more Gas Turbine Generating
units of 150 MW each as an extension to the existing power
plant. The equipment for the power plant shall be supplied
from BHEL’s manufacturing units at Haridwar, Bhopal, Jhansi,
Bangalore, Chennai and Ranipet. BHEL’s Power Sector Division
shall carry out the overall engineering of the project and
execute all site activities including erection and
commissioning of the plant.
BHEL made a foray in the Libyan market with a turnkey contract
for the 2x120 MW Tripoli West Power Station Extension. The
award of such an order in the seventies, amidst stiff
competition from the developed world was a measure of
recognition of BHEL’s standing in the international field.
Significantly, the power plant is giving excellent performance
for over 25 years.
