Information Technology Sector to be Encouraged: Reddy

 

New Delhi, December 29, 2006

 

The Minister for Urban Development, Jaipal Reddy has said that his Ministry would consider the idea of having a Open City Centre Plaza and Pedestrianizing designated area in identified cities in country. He said that the idea would be further explored, as the project would not require much funds. Shri Reddy was chairing the meeting of the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Urban Development here today. Giving this idea, Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi, the Rajya Sabha Member said that most towns or state capitals have a history and heritage and are in dilapidated or decayed condition because of lack of resources. He said a pilot scheme on this line may be taken up by the Urban Development Ministry in about 20 cities.


Jagdish Tytler, Lok Sabha Member requested Shri Jaipal Reddy to encourage service sectors like Information Technology in Delhi to provide jobs in those sectors to our young intellectuals in the capital. He also said that Tourism and Hotel Industry may also be taken up in Delhi to get more jobs for future generations. In reply, Jaipal Reddy said that the issue is under active consideration of the Ministry. Stating that Information Technology Sectors is playing a dominant role in Delhi, the Minister stated that service sector should be encouraged and projected. Shri Reddy said his Ministry would look into creating scope for Information Technology Sector. The points raised by Shri Tytler would be considered while finalizing the Delhi Master Plan 2021.

Sajjan Kumar, Lok Sabha Member urged the Chairman to keep the Commonwealth Games in the agenda for the next Consultative Committee Meeting. Accepting the suggestion, Jaipal Reddy said that the Delhi Development Authority, Government of Delhi and Sports Authority of India are involved in the Commonwealth Games and the Central Public Works Department and the Delhi Development Authority are executing the work.

Another member told the CPWD to construct buildings to give ethnic look of the region. The member also asked the agency to design or develop a concept for building cheap dwelling unit for poor people in the states. Another member asked about the impact of RTI Act on the working of CPWD.
