Government urges
Cooperatives to look at Services Sector
New Delhi, December 22, 2006
In a bid to layout effective policies for cooperatives in
the service sector Shri Sharad Pawar, Union Minister of
Agriculture, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution
emphasized that cooperatives must take advantage of the vast
growth opportunities in services sectors such as education,
health care, transport and tourism.
Speaking at the General Council of NCDC (National
Cooperative Development Corporation), Shri Pawar informed the
present co-operators that NCDC had sanctioned projects worth
Rs. 3170 crores in 2005-06, an increase of 100% over sanctions
in the previous year.
He said that NCDC which has disbursed about 39% of the
total assistance to the States where cooperatives are not
fully developed is also a viable option for the weaker
sections who account for 24% of the assistance provided by the
Corporation, agro-processing sector which receives over 40%,
and marketing and input activities which account for 34% of
NCDC's assistance.
Lauding the role of cooperatives in delivery of credit,
especially to farmers, the Minister said that the Government
was implementing a Rs. 13000 crore package to revitalize the
cooperative credit system.
