In a bid to layout effective policies for cooperatives in the service sector Shri Sharad Pawar, Union Minister of Agriculture, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution emphasized that cooperatives must take advantage of the vast growth opportunities in services sectors such as education, health care, transport and tourism.

Speaking at the General Council of NCDC (National Cooperative Development Corporation), Shri Pawar informed the present co-operators that NCDC had sanctioned projects worth Rs. 3170 crores in 2005-06, an increase of 100% over sanctions in the previous year.

He said that NCDC which has disbursed about 39% of the total assistance to the States where cooperatives are not fully developed is also a viable option for the weaker sections who account for 24% of the assistance provided by the Corporation, agro-processing sector which receives over 40%, and marketing and input activities which account for 34% of NCDC's assistance.

Lauding the role of cooperatives in delivery of credit, especially to farmers, the Minister said that the Government was implementing a Rs. 13000 crore package to revitalize the cooperative credit system.
