Crown Prince of Bhutan becomes the New King

New Delhi, December 19, 2006

Abdicating the throne one week ago, to make way for the new king of Bhutan, the King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck on 14 December 2006, in the presence of a designated set of audience of the cabinet issued the Royal Edict transferring the responsibilities of the King to his 26 year old son Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the Crown Prince of Bhutan.

Bequeathing his powers and throne to the Crown Prince, who is an alumni of the Oxford University, the King commanded that after a tremendous progress made by the country in the last thirty-four years and an unflinching support of the Bhutanese people, it was time to hand over the responsibilities to the Crown Prince, and that all Bhutanese must pledge to strengthen the sovereignty and security of the Country as the country moved towards a parliamentary democracy in 2008.

Partaking of the lessons of Nepal Conundrum, Jigme Khesar who has studied for a year at the National Defence College in Delhi and is also the president of the Bhutan-India Friendship Association in Bhutan has a huge responsibility of maintaining peace and tranquility in his country at the same time bringing a morning of Democracy for the people of Bhutan.

Wishing a bright and great future ahead for Bhutan under the new King and a democratic system, His majesty, King Singye Wangchuck reposed full faith and belief in the people of Bhutan and the new King of the country.
