Crown Prince of Bhutan
becomes the New King
New Delhi, December 19, 2006
Abdicating the throne one week ago, to make way for the new
king of Bhutan, the King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck on 14
December 2006, in the presence of a designated set of audience
of the cabinet issued the Royal Edict transferring the
responsibilities of the King to his 26 year old son Jigme
Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the Crown Prince of Bhutan.
Bequeathing his powers and throne to the Crown Prince, who
is an alumni of the Oxford University, the King commanded that
after a tremendous progress made by the country in the last
thirty-four years and an unflinching support of the Bhutanese
people, it was time to hand over the responsibilities to the
Crown Prince, and that all Bhutanese must pledge to strengthen
the sovereignty and security of the Country as the country
moved towards a parliamentary democracy in 2008.
Partaking of the lessons of Nepal Conundrum, Jigme Khesar
who has studied for a year at the National Defence College in
Delhi and is also the president of the Bhutan-India Friendship
Association in Bhutan has a huge responsibility of maintaining
peace and tranquility in his country at the same time bringing
a morning of Democracy for the people of Bhutan.
Wishing a bright and great future ahead for Bhutan under
the new King and a democratic system, His majesty, King Singye
Wangchuck reposed full faith and belief in the people of
Bhutan and the new King of the country.
