President Kalam to Inaugurate India Telecom 2006

 

 

New Delhi, December 12, 2006

 

For the first time, telecom majors from across the world will come together on a single platform at India Telecom 2006, a three-day international exhibition-cum-conference being organised by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry for Communications and Information Technology, Government of India, in association with FICCI and Telecom Equipment Manufacturers Association (TEMA).

India Telecom 2006 the biggest showcase of the telecom industry will be inaugurated by Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, President of India on 14 December at Pragati Maidan. Shri Dayanidhi Maran, Union Minister of Communications and Information Technology will deliver the keynote address at the inaugural session. Dr Shakeel Ahmad, Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology will also be present.

 

Over two hundred companies are expected to participate in the international exhibition and conference. In the exhibition the Indian telecom industry will be represented by companies like Bharti Airtel Limited, BSNL, C-DOT, Hutchison Essar Mobile Services Ltd, COAI, Qualcomm India Pvt Ltd. Reliance Communication Ltd., etc. Among the international participants there will be companies from Canada, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Italy while Taiwan, Korea and US companies will be seen in independent pavilions.

 

The highlight of India Telecom 2006 will be the CEO’s Roundtable with Dayanidhi Maran Minister for Communications and Information Technology Government of India, on the first day. It will be an interactive session of all the telecom CEOs with the Minister. Nripendra Misra Chairman, TRAI and D.S. Mathur, Secretary, DoT will also address the session. Some of the participants at the Roundtable will be Anil Ambani, Chairman, Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group, Sunil Bharti Mittal, CMD Bharti Enterprises, Nandan Nilekani CEO, Infosys, Shashi Ruia, Chairman ESSAR Group, A.K. Sinha CMD, BSNL, R.S.P. Sinha CMD, MTNL and Sanjeev Aga, MD, IDEA Cellular.

 

Concurrent to the exhibition would be technical seminars and conferences. The objective of the summit is to discuss new growth drivers that are revolutionizing the telecom sector in India and around the world. It would also focus on showcasing the huge potential that India holds in this sector for inviting investments.

 

One of the sessions will focus on “Innovation and Telecom equipment Manufacturing” with an objective to attract investment in manufacturing and making India as next hub for telecom equipment manufacturing. During the last one and half years, all these major world players have announced investments in India to the extent of over US $ 18 billion (about Rs.80,000 crores). World leaders in ICT like Intel, Cisco, SemIndia - AMD, Microsoft, Motorola, Ericsson, Nokia, Kyocera, Siemens, LG, Samsung and others, have already set-up or announced large investment plans for India in hardware manufacturing or chip design or R&D or to develop software products. This vividly establishes the investment friendly climate in India.

 

The first session on 15th December would be on Regulatory and Policy Imperatives. Shri Nripendra Misra Chairman, TRAI will chair the session, while the theme address would be delivered by Ambassador David A Gross, US Co-ordinator for international Communication and Information Policy, US Department of State. Alan Hadden, President, Global Mobile Suppliers Association will also address the session.

 

The other sessions would be on content application and regulation in the era of convergence, Innovation and telecom equipment manufacturing and India’s role in high growth markets.

 

The Valedictory session of the conference will be addressed by Dr Shakeel Ahmad Minister of State for Communications and IT. Rajan Bharti Mittal Chairman Infrastructure committee FICCI, P.S. Ramesh, President TEMA and Sanjeev Aga Chairman COAI will also address the session.

 

India Telecom 2006 is being sponsored by BSNL, Nokia, Ericsson, Reliance Communications and ZTE. MTNL is the co-sponsor while the Associate Sponsors are Airtel, Idea Cellular, Tata Indicom, Qualcomm and UT Starcomm. The Conference is being sponsored by Ericsson, Nokia, Idea, Telisma, ADC while Ernst and Young are the Knowledge Partners.
