FTA to be the key point
in PM’s Japan agenda
New Delhi, December 07, 2006
India and Japan will begin talks on a free trade agreement
(FTA) when Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visits Japan
covering goods, services and investments, said Deputy Chief of
Mission, Embassy of Japan, Ryoichi Horie.
This is likely to be finalized early next years, reflecting
the current upbeat mood between the two countries, he said.
Many delegations from Japanese companies have visited in India
this year, and expressed a strong desire to have a presence in
India. “More mutual efforts and endeavours are needed to grow
the India-Japan economic partnership.”
Ahead of PM Manmohan Singh’s Japan visit, business and
political leaders are hopeful of significant break-throughs in
economic and political ties between the two countries. Some
other outcomes will be increasing the number of flights
between India and Japan and signing more sister-province
agreements. Mr. Horie said these would be announced next week
during the PM’s visit.
Some of the areas of common interest currently are
economics, technology and the environment.
SMEs will be one of the focal areas during the PM’s visit.
Jetro, Japan’s external trade organization, has five
incubators in India to help the development of SMEs.
There is a general expectation that Japanese companies will
step up their investment in India following Dr. Singh’s visit
and an improved investment climate.
