ONGC first PSU to get ISO 9001 for Internal Audit
New Delhi December 06, 2006
Internal Audit function of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation
Ltd. has been accredited with ISO 9001:2000
certification by M/s Det Norske Veritas (DNV). This is the
first time any public sector company has been accredited with
ISO certification for its Internal Audit function.
In a function at ONGC office at New Delhi on 6th December
2006, M/s DNV handed over the formal accreditation certificate
to ONGC C&MD R. S. Sharma. Receiving the accreditation, Mr.
Sharma said, "This stands as a testimony to the continual
efforts taken by ONGC to maintain leadership in Good Corporate
Governance Practices".
Complimenting the entire internal audit team of ONGC headed
by B. L. Ghasolia for their efforts, Mr. Sharma also
complimented the consultant team of M/s Ernst & Young for
facilitating the accreditation.
In his opening remarks, B. L. Ghasolia explained that
Internal Audit of ONGC has moved a long way from Voucher-based
auditing to System-based and Risk-based auditing. Realizing
that it is essential to maintain audit systems in tune with
the contemporary global practices, this system-based approach
was adopted, for which ONGC went for ISO 9001:2000
certification.
With this accreditation, the effectiveness of Quality
System needs to be certified by management on regular basis
which requires audit to be carried out in a professional
manner. Accordingly, a Quality Management System has
also been established in ONGC for effective implementation and
maintenance of the Quality System.
It may be added, that all the operational installations of
ONGC are accredited for Quality, Health, Safety and
Environment Management, making ONGC unique in the world
to be 100% compliant.
