Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Hon’ble President of India gave away the prestigious “National Energy Conservation Awards” for the year 2005 to 54 Private and Public Sector Industries & Establishments for making commendable efforts in the area of Energy Conservation in their respective fields, at a function held in New Delhi today.

These annual awards recognize innovation and achievements in energy conservation by the Industry; Commercial & Government Buildings, and raise awareness that energy conservation plays a big part in India's response to reducing global warming through energy savings

The Award Scheme has motivated the participating units to undertake serious efforts in saving energy and environment. The data pertaining to 311 industrial units indicated that these units have been able to collectively avoid generation of 1316 million kWh/year of electrical energy, which is equivalent to the energy generated from a 250 MW thermal power station at a PLF of 60% in 2004-2005. In the monetary terms, these units have been able to save Rs.989 crores per year on account of electrical and thermal energy saved during the year 2004-2005.

The winners of National Level Painting Competition organized by the Ministry of Power for children were also awarded on the occasion. More than three lakh children participated in the competition from all over the country.

Energy Conservation National Painting Competition

In 2004-05, Rs. 992 crore were saved on an investment of only Rs. 1319 crore, by 343 units comprising industries, government buildings and commercial buildings [private sector], showing how profitable investments in energy conservation are.

President Kalam suggested steps for energy conservation strategies which were

  • Evolving energy utilization norms for different industry such as cement, aluminum, steel, urea, textile etc on per capita basis and provide a challenge to designers to work towards the target.
  • Creating an enterprise wise review mechanism to reveal the variance from planned utilization to the actual. As far as possible try to allocate the responsibility for this variance and take immediate corrective action.
  • Creating an idea bank in which employees can provide innovative solutions for energy efficient operations. There must be a system of analysis of ideas for implementing practical ideas on the shop floor and suitable reward.
  • It is essential to install progressively, the energy efficient nano lamps, energy efficient heating and AC system in the enterprise. For example, nearly seventy five million households in the rural sector today do not have electrical connection. It would be a great saver of electricity if we can install nano crystal based LED lamps in all these rural houses.
  • A mission mode programme can be created for energy conservation. We have to set yearly target of saving twenty five billion units per year from the present 3.2 billion units, so that we can wipe out the existing shortage within the next four years.
  • Preparation and circulation of a small booklet enumerating the simple to follow good practices for energy conservation by offices, residential complexes, industries and agricultural farmers.
  • In house R&D establishment should constantly work towards energy efficient processes for adoption in both residential and commercial buildings.

The National Energy Conservation Award Scheme has accumulated energy savings of 867 MW of Power, 13.9 Lakhs KL of Oil, 40.5 Lakhs MT of coal & 14.75 billion cubic meters of Gas worth Rs. 4046 crore during the last 7 years schemes of 1999-2005.

Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), a statutory organization established under the Energy Conservation Act 2001, manages the National Energy Conservation Award scheme. BEE is also assisting industry and commercial establishments to meet the mandatory provisions of the Act through voluntary approach.

Ministry of Power and Bureau of Energy Efficiency have also undertaken National Campaign on Energy Conservation 2005. Under this campaign, Painting Competition on Energy Conservation at School, State and National level was executed. 17560 no. of Schools and 3.43 lakhs students of 4th & 5th standard participated in the School Level Painting Competition, which was quite encouraging. The state level painting competition was held on 14th November 2005 and the two first winners from 35 State and UT participated in the National Painting Competition on 11th December 2005 at New Delhi. The tiny-tots have given the inspiring ideas and have drawn the impressive paintings.
