IISS-CITI India Global Forum start in New Delhi

New Delhi, April 18, 2008

The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), in association with Citi (formerly Citigroup) is organizing  the 1st Annual IISS-CITI India Global Forum  in New Delhi, India.

The India Global Forum is essential for comprehensive strategic assessments of India’s rise as a great power.  It will discuss the key issues where economics, business, politics and security converge, including India’s search for energy security and stability, transnational security challenges, and India’s relations with the great powers.

This conference will bring together 200 leaders of government, business, academia, policy, media and the armed forces from India and the world.

The India Global Forum will discuss India’s new status and responsibilities as a rising great power, the liabilities that India would have to accept to perform such a role, and its wider impact on regional and global stability.

On the eve of the conference the delegates also met the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Speaking to group of delegates he said that India has successfully followed strategy of re-integrating into the world economy. Mentioning about the liberation policy which was initiated in 1991 and which was subsequently moved by successive governments till this date.

"We remain committed to economic reform and liberalisation... in ancient India, a monarch was regarded as a good king if he did not interfere too much in the life of the people. That has been our guiding principle as well," Singh told delegates of the IISS-City India Global Forum attending an international conference in New Delhi.

Gathering together key members of India's elite with outside commentators and political actors from North America, Europe, the Gulf and Asia, the India Global Forum will provide a comprehensive strategic assessment of India's impact on the world stage,' said Dr John Chipman CMG, Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the IISS
